The first stage of any house extension or conversion project is usually the preparation of measured survey drawings of the existing house. This usually means an Architect would visit your house and measure all the rooms, take photos and sketch the existing floor plans. This can be quite an expensive part of the process (typically costing £500+ just for the initial survey drawings), and due to COVID-19 restrictions, we like to avoid house visits wherever possible! Architect in a Box is our way to help you prepare your own survey drawings. You’ll be sent everything you need to easily prepare a set of floor plan sketches, including guidance and example sketches. You do not need to be good at drawing! Survey drawings are very basic, it just needs to be a simple sketch of the floor plan of your house, with dimensions showing room sizes.
When purchasing Architect in a Box along with one of our design services, we will use your survey sketches to prepare a draft set of floor plan and elevation drawings, then send them to you for approval. Once you are happy with the initial drawings we will discuss your requirements and ideas for your house extension/conversion project. We will design and prepare the drawings, send them to you for discussion/approval. Once you are completely happy with all the drawings, we will prepare and submit the Planning Application to your local council, and act as your agent for the duration of the project. We’ll send updates throughout the process and deal with any questions from the Planning Officer.

If you already have floor plan survey sketches, estate agent floor plans, or plans from a previous Planning Application, you can skip the first stage and simply send us the information you have to sales@crdesignservices.co.uk along with an order form from here. We’ll get back to you with a quote.
Some projects do not need planning approval and can be completed under Permitted Development. These are projects that do not require prior approval from the council by default (such as a garage conversion, or extensions under a certain size). Although a Planning Application may not be required, we would still recommend having drawings prepared to help with the design of the project, to use at Building Control stage, and for builders to quote/build from. Our Architect in a Box kit will arrive within a few days. Once we receive your survey sketches, it can take 1 or 2 weeks to go through the design process until we are ready to submit the Planning Application. Planning Applications can take 8 weeks (or longer depending on how busy your local council is).
